That\u2019s the highest rate of any country in the world, and more than double the rate of the next country on the list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The authors estimate that of the 265 million privately owned firearms in the US, about half are owned by 3% of the US adult population. What does this say about the policies in place?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>School years in the United States typically range from 160 to 180 days depending on the state, excluding holidays, such as Thanksgiving, breaks, and weekends. Hence, schools may be referred to as a home away from home.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There were approximately 35 gun attacks in schools across America as of October that resulted in injuries and deaths in the year 2022 alone.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With&nbsp;about&nbsp;<strong>48% of White men<\/strong>&nbsp;say they own a gun, the Pew survey found. By contrast,&nbsp;<strong>24% of White women<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>24% of non-White men<\/strong>&nbsp;said they owned a gun.&nbsp;<strong>Women of color&nbsp;<\/strong>reported the lowest rates of gun ownership&nbsp;<strong>at 16%<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are&nbsp;different reasons why a person may see the need to own a gun.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Where a person lives also plays a role.<\/strong>\u00a0The Pew survey found that\u00a0<strong>46% of those who lived in rural areas<\/strong>\u00a0said they owned a gun, while only<strong>\u00a028% of suburbanites\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>19% of city dwellers<\/strong>\u00a0owned a gun.\u00a0<strong>The Northeast\u00a0<\/strong>has the lowest rates of gun ownership at\u00a0<strong>16%<\/strong>, while roughly\u00a0<strong>a third of people in the South, Midwest and West<\/strong>\u00a0report personally owning a gun.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>How a person is raised can also influence gun ownership.<\/strong>\u00a0About<strong>\u00a067%<\/strong>\u00a0of gun owners say they grew up in a\u00a0<strong>gun-owning household<\/strong>, while only\u00a0<strong>40%<\/strong>\u00a0of those who\u00a0<strong>don\u2019t own guns did<\/strong>, Pew researchers report.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Protection<\/strong>\u00a0is a motivator for a vast majority of people. Pew found that\u00a0<strong>two-thirds\u00a0<\/strong>of gun owners cited protection as a major reason for owning a gun, while about\u00a0<strong>four in 10<\/strong>\u00a0cited hunting and\u00a0<strong>three in 10\u00a0<\/strong>cited sport shooting as a major reason.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There are also some slight variations in gun ownership across<strong>\u00a0educational levels<\/strong>.
