{"id":14683,"date":"2024-04-28T19:28:10","date_gmt":"2024-04-28T19:28:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.revolutionnaire.co\/be\/?p=14683"},"modified":"2024-05-24T14:00:05","modified_gmt":"2024-05-24T14:00:05","slug":"informal-settlements-and-slums","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.revolutionnaire.co\/be\/informal-settlements-and-slums\/","title":{"rendered":"Informal Settlements and Slums"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Today,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.habitatforhumanity.org.uk\/what-we-do\/slum-rehabilitation\/what-is-a-slum\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1 in 7 people live in a slum<\/a>, and about&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.habitatforhumanity.org.uk\/what-we-do\/slum-rehabilitation\/what-is-a-slum\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1 in every 4 people<\/a>&nbsp;will live in a slum by 2030. While&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/unstats.un.org\/sdgs\/report\/2019\/goal-11\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">three-quarters of slum-dwellers<\/a>&nbsp;live in Asia and Africa, informal housing is an increasing problem across the globe.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, what are informal settlements\/slums? Well, these two words can be used to refer to the same conditions. They are areas where&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/gsdrc.org\/topic-guides\/urban-governance\/key-policy-challenges\/informal-settlements\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">residents are plagued by<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Overcrowded and unsanitary living conditions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Insecure tenure or limited land rights (for example, squatting or renting informally)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lack of essential services and infrastructure (like water and toilets)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Unregulated housing structures and dangerous geographic\/environmental conditions (like living close to toxic landfills or on hazardous slopes)&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The problems of slums go&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.habitatforhumanity.org.uk\/what-we-do\/slum-rehabilitation\/what-is-a-slum\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">way beyond housing<\/a>. Slums\u2019 effects include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Health and well-being. Diseases spread quickly, and there is no proper health care.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Slums lack law enforcement and are often sites of violence.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>People living in slums have little voice in politics or government\/institutional decisions that affect them.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Slums perpetuate cycles of poverty. Productivity is low, children have trouble staying in school, and the economy is primarily informal, which marginalizes workers.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDecent shelter for all can never be guaranteed so long as there is widespread poverty.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Habib, 2009)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To date, there\u2019s been some action by international institutions to highlight the problem of informal settlements and inadequate housing. The UN\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/unstats.un.org\/sdgs\/report\/2019\/goal-11\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SDG 11<\/a>&#8212; sustainable cities and communities&#8211; is an example of this.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In terms of the possibility of taking more concrete action, International Human Rights Law does encompass inadequate housing. It states that all people have the right to \u201can adequate standard of living,\u201d including living in security, peace, and dignity. Still, despite being a fundamental right, the right to adequate housing is challenging to uphold&#8211; over 1 billion people worldwide face inadequate housing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So how can we address this issue? Many governments don\u2019t want to improve these settlements because they don\u2019t want people living there in the first place. Due to insecure tenure, residents don\u2019t want to put money into improving the conditions of a house\/community from which they could be evicted, or that could be destroyed at any second. The same goes for NGOs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, there\u2019s still impactful action we can take as individuals.
